A Seasonal Companion
A Seasonal Companion: Walking through the seasons with Red Flowering Currant, I learned key values-- generosity, hospitality, reciprocity and hope--that help me in our troubled times. In early spring, her cascading flowers welcome Rufous Hummingbirds on their long journey from Mexico exchanging nectar for pollination. In late spring, she hosts Zephyr Butterflies who lay their eggs on the underside of her leaves. In late summer, she nourishes animals with nutritious currants, and they spread her seeds. In fall, she sheds leaves and fuels the soil organisms who put nutrients into the soil around her. In winter, she provides hope for a new season with her swelling buds.
