Red Salmon Creek Project 2009-14
Lucia volunteered as a salmon watcher for the Nisqually Tribe at Red Salmon Creek in South Puget Sound. The creek flows into the Nisqually River and then Puget Sound. Recently the Nisqually Tribe removed 100 year old agricultural dikes and now salt water floods the estuary allowing the river to breathe once again. This dramatically increases the habitat for salmon and lots of other species. Extensive restoration efforts are underway that include removal of invasive plants and planting of over 7000 native trees and shrubs. Lucia visits the spring fed creek and salt marsh weekly and records her observations. She is inspired by the hardiness of the species that live here.
