The name Big Skookum Inlet refers to the strong currents of Hammersly Inlet that flows into Shelton. The head of the inlet was home to the Sahewamish people. The opening is one-eighth of a mile wide and is known as TEKEba'lo-tsid which means arial duck net mouth. Here local people would stretch a net to catch flocks of ducks flying up the inlet.
