On the edges of the salt marsh, cattails put down roots beneath the salt layer. The female redwing blackbird nests here. She selects leaves from the previous year's growth, soaks them and then weaves them into a nest where the older growth intersects. While the sound of I-5 is dominant here, you can hear the protective call of the male redwinged blackbird.
